By George Levy. We went to lunch yesterday and I sat listening to him with my mouth gaping open and my body in physical shock. What's mind boggling is he had zero books to research the Civil War Chicago Confederate Prison, Camp Douglas. He even had to research the name Camp Douglas. He left his law firm and moved to Washington to read highly secured original letters and notices from archivists, for two years. Pelican, his publisher, contacted him because of an article by a Sun Times friend (know how important those connections are; Nathan Bransford, list the best writing conferences in Forums).
The thing is he has Notes, a Bibliography, Tables and Chronology of Events. He's wholly disciplined. I admire that the most. Often, he spent twelve hours a day in the archives. He's wholly accountable too and I know every word I've read so far is as exactly as it happened.
Chicago was a mess. We have a lot to hide. We have a lot of dead bodies under our feet.
